Gravel Tire Pressure Guide
The right gravel tire pressure balances rolling speed, comfort, grip, casing support, and rim protection. Width alone is not enough: rider weight, surface, tire construction, load, rim, and tube or tubeless setup all matter.
Why gravel tire pressure matters
Gravel is not one surface. Smooth hardpack, washboard, loose stone, wet clay, and rocky descents ask different things of the casing. Canyon’s gravel guidance frames pressure as a balance between performance, comfort, and control; HED also connects pressure recommendations to rim and tire size. That is why a gravel tire pressure chart is useful only when its assumptions match your bike.

Account for bags and water, especially at the rear wheel.
Use the complete moving system, including bags and bottles. More load generally needs more casing support; another rider’s number is not a safe substitute.
Nominal width is a starting label. A wider rim can change the inflated profile, so measure the mounted tire if your decision is close.
Tubeless removes the inner tube pinch-flat problem, but low pressure can still cause burps, rim strikes, or vague cornering. Tubes need a larger pinch-flat margin.
A supple casing may feel comfortable but can need support on sharp rock. Washboard and loose stone can reward a different pressure from smooth hardpack.
Finding the ideal gravel bike tire pressure
Start with the gravel calculator or a manufacturer chart. The calculator is a baseline, not a guarantee: keep the lower maximum from the tire and rim in force, and do not use a low result if the casing folds or the rim is taking hits. A good starting point is the one you can repeat on the same route.
Set the front and rear separately. The rear commonly carries more load, while the front can benefit from a small reduction for steering grip. If you change tire width, casing, rim, bags, or surface, calculate again rather than applying the previous PSI by habit.
How to check gravel tire pressure
Check cold tires with one consistent gauge before the ride. A digital pressure gauge is useful when you are testing small changes, but repeatable method matters more than a particular gauge style. Note the front PSI, rear PSI, tire size, load, surface, and any rim or casing event.
- Harsh washboard: try 1 PSI less front first, then retest the same section.
- Rim tap: add 1–2 PSI to the wheel that hit and inspect the rim and casing.
- Vague cornering: add 1 PSI or choose more casing support rather than dropping farther.
- Loose climb: change one wheel at a time and keep enough rear support for traction.
- Puncture or air loss: repair it before judging the pressure; use the tubeless repair guide when relevant.
Protect the rim and tire
Do not chase the lowest possible PSI. Stop lowering pressure when the tire bottoms out, squirms in corners, burps air, or loses its intended shape. Hookless systems also require approved tire pairings and their own pressure limit; a general gravel recommendation cannot override that.
