Rider-and-bike weight

Include bags, water, clothing, and tools. Extra load normally needs more support, especially at the rear.

Tubeless or tubes

Tubeless can reduce pinch-flat risk, but it does not prevent burping, rim strikes, or a vague casing at too-low pressure.

Light or chunky gravel

Choose the surface that matches the route. Washboard and sharp rock can require a different pressure from smooth hardpack.

Rim and casing

Rim width changes the inflated profile. Casing construction and inserts change how much support the tire has at a given PSI.

How to use a gravel pressure recommendation

The result is a test starting point, not a guarantee or a minimum safe pressure. Check the lower maximum printed or published for your tire and rim. Canyon and HED both place gravel pressure in the context of tire size, surface, rider system, and rim choice; use those ideas to sanity-check the calculator rather than copying a generic chart.

Ride the same route with cold tires and record front PSI, rear PSI, surface, load, and handling. If the front feels harsh, reduce it by 1 PSI and retest. If the rear hits the rim, add 1–2 PSI to the rear and inspect the tire and rim before continuing.

Protect the rim before chasing comfort

Stop lowering pressure when the casing folds, the tire squirms, the rim is struck, or a tubeless bead burps. More volume, a stronger casing, an insert, or a different tire may solve the problem better than another small PSI change.
