Hope Tech 4 V4 review: power, fitment and rider fit

What the Hope Tech 4 V4 is for

The Hope Tech 4 V4 is Hope's big-power mountain-bike brake, intended for the sort of riding where speed, weight, e-bike load, bike-park laps or long descents can push smaller brakes hard. Hope associates the V4 with aggressive enduro, downhill, bike-park, heavy-rider, tandem and e-MTB use.

That role frames the decision: the question is whether the bike and terrain need more braking capacity, not whether the most powerful option is automatically the most useful one. The Radavist placed the Tech 4 V4 at the top of Hope's robust line for aggressive trail and downhill riders, while noting Hope's claimed 30 percent stopping-power increase over the Tech 3 V4 generation.

V4, E4 or EVO GR4?

Hope positions the V4 as its high-power option for enduro, downhill, tandems and e-bikes, while the E4 sits closer to trail and all-mountain use. That leaves the V4 as the relevant choice when a rider's use has moved beyond the E4's intended role but does not necessarily call for Hope's newest maximum-power gravity brake.

EVO GR4 changes the comparison because it is Hope's current maximum-power gravity brake. The V4 remains the fit for a build that values its established platform and possible vented-rotor route, whereas Hope directs riders wanting its newer maximum-power gravity option without vented-rotor compatibility toward EVO GR4.

Lever feel, reach and bite-point adjustment

The documented V4 package includes tool-free reach and bite-point adjustment, a one-piece CNC caliper, hybrid pistons, standard or braided hose options and a stated 30 percent pressure increase over Tech 3. The Radavist describes how reach adjustment lets a rider place the blade where it is comfortable to reach, while bite-point adjustment changes when the caliper begins to engage the rotor.

The Lost Co found a broad usable range in the reach and bite-point screws and described the large lever blade as providing leverage for strong braking on trail. The Radavist explains that an earlier engagement gives a more immediate response, while a later setting leaves more movement before the brake reaches the same point of engagement.

How the V4's power is described in testing

In The Radavist's testing, the brake reached full stopping power without a maximum lever pull, with power building through the stroke on steep sustained descents.

Bikeboard linked the V4's lower spring force with easier lever actuation, reduced hand fatigue and precise modulation in its long-term review. Bikeboard recorded that a wandering lever and shifting bite point could appear during particularly steep, continuously hard braking in high temperatures, so the strongest case for the V4 still includes careful setup and realistic expectations of lever feel.

Rotor, mount and fork checks before buying

The V4 caliper is not compatible with every direct-mount 180 mm fork because the large piston design and differing mount positions can create a clearance issue. For that application, Hope recommends using the correct mount with a 200 mm rotor.

Hope lists 3.3 mm as the maximum rotor thickness for the V4 caliper. A thicker-rotor plan therefore needs a check of rotor thickness and diameter alongside the mount and available clearance before parts are fitted.

Setup and service implications

Hope's braking guidance tells riders to follow the manual, pay attention to torque settings and align the rotor centrally in the caliper. Those checks matter before judging a V4's lever feel or braking response, because rotor and caliper alignment are part of the documented setup context.

For Tech 4 servicing, the dedicated process and fittings are part of the ownership calculation. The Radavist characterised installation and bleeding as straightforward but somewhat old-school.

The buying decision

For enduro, downhill, e-bike, tandem, heavy-rider or repeated long-descent use, the V4 can make sense as a power-focused brake with modulation, serviceability and meaningful setup adjustment. Its strongest reasons to buy are the high-power role, adjustable lever controls and established V4 platform; fitment and rotor choice are practical checks before buying. ENDURO's comparison test found a test-specific rear-wheel-skid concern despite the V4's braking power, smooth lever feel and wide modulation.

Choose the V4 when its established platform and possible vented-rotor route suit the build, rather than simply because it is Hope's powerful option. Riders whose use remains closer to trail and all-mountain riding should compare the E4, while riders who want Hope's newer maximum-power gravity option without vented-rotor compatibility should compare EVO GR4.
